News From Excelsior College

Comenius 2012

Following our successful Comenius Partnership from 2009-2011 Excelsior College will lead on a new bid to commence a Comenius Partnership in September 2012.

The new bid will involve a school in Sweden, Portugal and Spain.  We will be working together to raise aspirations and increase the ICT, Creative Writing and entrepreneurial skills of our students.

This is an exciting prospect and one which we relish.  The students get do much from these shared European experiences and make friends and long lasting relationships.

Chloe Nielsen said of her involvement “The Comenius visit I went on to Greece was the best experience ever.  I got to spend time with real families.  It is not like visiting a country as a tourist.  I am still in contact with some of the friends I made but I am now confident enough to consider working abroad - if you get the chance to do this this, do, you’ll love it.”

Excelsior College will host 24 visitors from Spain, Portugal and Sweden in October this year and up to 18 students will be given the opportunity to visit those countries in return.

College Outings

Children In Need

Congratulations to all Excelsior College students who went ‘spotty’ raising money for Children in Need.  We are still counting but, thanks to all the hard work, the students will raise in excess of £150.00
Khadeeja Abbas, Krystian Osicki and Ryan Bates all supported the event organising raffles and cake sales.
Jordan Mair volunteered to have his legs waxed, with the students and staff paying to apply a strip of wax.  Oh was he brave!  You can tell from the look on his face in these photographs that this was an extremely painful experience!

Daniel Cook, Asad Nadeem, Daniel Kerr and Mr Ian Stonehouse also did their bit cycling to Hexham and back to raise funds.  If they successfully completed their journey in less than four hours sponsors pledged to pay double money.  The team finished in an impressive 3 hours and 35 minutes - this was going to be expensive for some!

Thank you also to the two gentlemen on route to Hexham who kindly put their hands in their pockets and contributed to the cause.

College Dress Code

‘Well done’ to the students of Excelsior College; it is fantastic to see how smart and professional they look. The Business dress code has been embraced by the students and it shows. They all look smart, professional and above all stylish.

Down On The Farm

There is a new arrival in the chicken coup. Excelsior’s first chick made her way into the world on the 4th October 2011. She is healthy, happy and pecking her way around the mini farmyard, with her mother watching over her.
The chickens and the rabbits are living in complete harmony in Excelsior Academy’s mini farm and the new arrival is a real added bonus.

New College Facilities

The college has added some new facilities over the summer:

  • A new set of computer suites, EX10 and EX11, have been created so that students use industrial standard equipment similar to that they would use in any workplace environment.

  • A new quiet study area has been created where time tabled study lessons will take place.

  • The main corridor, between the East and West wing of the College, has a new seating and study area for the use of sixth form only.

  • More Laptop computers will be available in study areas for students to use during quiet study periods.

  • A new pool table has been installed into the common room for students to enjoy in the mornings before college begins or during lunch times.

  • A new College reception area has been created just inside the sixth form College entry doors.

‘I expect high standards from the students who attend Excelsior College and as such I believe that the environment in which they work should also be of a high standard.  The improvement in the facilities will help the students to perform better and achieve their potential.’
