1. The Excelsior Trustees and governing body are fully committed to providing high quality educational services and best value to the communities in the west end of Newcastle, for this reason it is now seeking approval to extend the age-range of the Excelsior Academy to become an All-through Academy (4-18).
2. The Excelsior Academy is now going out to consultation to extend the current age-range, secondary and sixth form (11-18) to an ‘All-Through’ Academy (4-18) catering for primary, secondary and sixth form students. The proposal is for a phased implementation, initially 30 Reception and 30 Year 1 primary school places would be provided in September 2013, growing year on year primary phase provision will reach 210 primary school aged places (4-11) by September 2018. During this period the shortage of primary places in this area of Newcastle is predicted to grow and thus this additional provision would enable local children to find a primary school place near to their homes and should have little or no impact on other local primary schools.
3. The new Primary Phase will be a central part of the All-through Academy, it will have distinctive features:
• A Specialism of Business and Enterprise
• Instrumental Music Tuition for all children subsidised by the Academy Sponsor
• Modern Language teaching for children in years 4 to 6
• Science curriculum will be fully aligned with Newcastle’s “Science City” ambitions and the outstanding local Centre for Life
• Lessons in Happiness and Well-being
• An extensive community offering for Family Learning
• An innovative organisation of the school day and week that will provide 52 week 24/7 learning and make effective and efficient use of the Excelsior Academy accommodation.
4. The Excelsior Academy has an outstanding site and accommodation on which to establish an All-through School. The range of facilities, resources and equipment will allow the Academy to provide breadth and depth in terms of the curricular and extra-curricular offer.
