Packed Lunch Policy

From September 2008 packed lunches brought from home and consumed in schools/Academies (or on organised visits) are regulated by national standards.

Our policy aims to ensure that all pupils regardless of whether they choose to bring a packed lunch or eat a meal prepared by the Academy have a healthy nutritious meal during the day which meets national standards.

To achieve this Excelsior Academy is committed to

  • Ensuring that free, fresh drinking water is readily available at all times, for pupils bringing packed lunches.
    Working with parents to ensure that packed lunches abide by the standards listed below.
  • Providing the same high quality restaurant provision for all pupils regardless of their preference for meals.
  • Unfortunately fridge space is not available for storing packed lunches. Pupils are advised to bring packed lunches in appropriate containers/insulated bags where possible to keep the food fresh.
    •

    Guidance for Packed Lunches:

  • At least one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetables every day.
  • Meat, fish or other source of non-dairy protein (e.g. lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, hummus, peanut butter and falafel) every day.
  • A starchy food such as any type of bread, pasta, rice, couscous, noodles, potatoes or other type of cereals every day.
  • Dairy food such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais or custard everyday.
  • Parents are advised that cakes should be included only as part of a balanced meal and meat products such as sausage rolls, individual pies, corned meat and sausages/chipolatas should be included only occasionally.

    Packed Lunches should not include

  • Crisps
  • Confectionery such as chocolate bars, chocolate-coated biscuits and sweets.

    Drinks

  • Fizzy pop or other fizzy drinks are not permitted for consumption at any time during the Academy day including break and lunch times. We provide the following healthy drink options
  • Water, still or sparkling, fruit juice, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, yoghurt or milk drinks and smoothies.
  • Water is freely available for pupils throughout the day and during lunchtimes.
